Humpday: Sensabombs
Utah Jazz wing Brice Sensabaugh has been going off in his home state of Florida, the Utah Utes women are ranked and so are the Utah State mens hoopsters.
BREAKING NEWS» Brice Sensabaugh felt right at home this past week.
He should; the state of Florida is where he calls home.
But, Sensabaugh was in another state of mind this past week. The career seven-point per-game scorer came off the bench; it didn’t matter.
He’d just come back from yet another stint on the SLC Stars, the Jazz’ NBA G-League team.
That didn’t matter, either.
What did, however, was that Sensabaugh was paying close attention to what he would be doing with this round, brown sphere that he hurtled with great accuracy into an orange cylinder.
At Miami, Sensabaugh knocked down 12 of his 18 jumpers this past Saturday for 34 points and a 136-100 win.
But Wait » At Orlando this past Sunday, the Ohio State Buckeye scored 27 more and drained 11-of-19 from the field in his hometown, leading the Jazz to a 105-92 victory.
All told, Sensabaugh dropped more Sensabombs [23] than any Jazz player this past week and made it very sensible for one Sensabaugh in the state of Florida to be in a state of oneness with the basketball hoop.
If only the Jazz had gotten more production from him at the New York Knicks, where Sensabaugh had four points in 15 minutes, we might be sitting here talking about a three game winning streak instead of two.
At any rate, Sensabaugh’s per game average shot up to almost nine points and was his third game in which he’s scored 20 or more over his past five.
The wins will not have a lot of bearing on the number of ping pong balls the Jazz will have in the draft—Utah gets a few chances at the Golden Goose [likely to be Duke’s Cooper Flagg] regardless.
What will have some bearing on this group, however, is whether or not they can start coming together as a unit and continue to string up wins. At 9-25 at the time of this writing, Utah sits 2.5 games back of the worst record in the NBA and is only 8 games out of a spot in the West play-in’s.
Make that make sens—you can’t.
But what you can make sense of is the fact that the Jazz may have found a guy who can, more often than not as his shooting stroke attests, hit a Sensabomb. «
Runnin’ With An Assist From Lynne
Some People Say » That you fall precipitously into a pit filled with nasty things after your head coach up and leaves for the WNBA, unannounced.
That is not what has happened to this Utah Utes womens’ basketball team that is now ranked No. 22 in the AP Poll and riding high at 3-0 in Big 12 Conference play going into a pivotal matchup against No. 12 Kansas State.
“So proud of this team. They continue to show up for each other and get the job done. Love this group.
WE > ME mentality🫡
Go Utes🙌🏼,” posted Utah head coach Gavin Petersen.
Not only that, I take back what I said about Lynne Roberts. Her public lobby for voters to do right by the Utes and rank them likely helped Utah get that solid ranking by the AP and by the USA Today, this week. If Utah alums could just mosey on up S. Campus Drive to the Huntsman Center and watch something else other than gymnastics, that would help as well. «

Shout Outs
… Big ups to
at Bracket Busters, a site that showcases all the mid-majors in mens’ college hoops. He gave our Utah State Aggies some love this past week, not only ranking them in his Top 25—he put them at No. 1! Here’s more from Elliott:“Mason Falslev and Ian Martinez were a lethal duo, averaging a combined 30.5 points in the two games. The Aggies are now 14-1 on the season with a couple solid matchups this week against San Jose State on Tuesday and Boise State on Saturday.”
Martinez [in above photo] and his Aggies clocked in at No. 25 in both the AP and USA Today Top 25 Polls. «

» Boxer Johnny Tapia repped the 505 like no other athlete had before him. For those unaware, the number represents the area code of the state of New Mexico, a vast place that is altogether beautiful and haunting. Tapia himself kept some pretty interesting company, including having guys corner him like the one and only rocker Sammy Hagar who waited for Johnny to show up one night in Vegas:
“I'm waiting in the lobby looking at my watch thinking, “Is he ever turning up?” About an hour later, his wife Teresa walks over and says, “We were here on time, but as Johnny was waiting in the lobby for you, some guy was giving the lady behind the desk some shit and Johnny went up to him and said, ‘Hey man. Stop being rude to the lady,’ and the guy said, ‘F*** you.’ Johnny knocked the guy out in the lobby and his buddy took off running. Johnny took after him, then the cops arrived. So Johnny was late because he was filling out papers for the cops.” You had to love him for that.
Hagar was one of many celebrities who helped corner Tapia, who for most of his tormented and shortened 45 years battled the demons of drug abuse and addiction. Together with many celebs that included Mike Tyson, his wife Teresa moved Johnny around his beloved state and outside of it as the law would allow, to keep him out of harm’s way. Some times it worked, and Tapia stayed clean long enough to win and hold world titles in three different weight classes; other times it did not—as Albuquerque’s native son [and, sun] eventually fell before his time. «

What Are We DOING?!?
» For the first time in BVU [Brian Vs. Utah] history, one person has made his picture count in two sections of the Humpday in the same issue. I’m sorry, but this post from former Utah running back Mike Mitchell might be up for the WAWDOTY [Of The Year!] despite the fact that we’ve only just begun the year 2025.
This guy ran for a whopping 147 yards at the U! What is he talking about?! The Utes THROTTLED Arizona for years prior to last season’s 23-10 L. I guess we know which room Utah running back Micah Bernard was referring to. «
» The winner of the 2024 What Are We Doing Of The Year is … Raygun. The Aussie breakdancer at the Paris Olympics captured all but one vote [they voted for the K-State-BYU burrito bettor]. She wins nothing except for the satisfaction.
Thanks for reading; be safe and be well. I’ll see ya next time.
