Real Salty: What The Hell Is This Real Salt Lake FO Doing To This Team This Offseason?

RSL superfan Sheena McFarland is PO'd after the club traded Aaron Herrera for half a mil and an int'l slot. This Apple TV deal with FOX looks shady though, and the Leagues Cup TV coverage is a joke

Real Salty: What The Hell Is This FO Doing To This Team This Offseason?

RSL superfan Sheena McFarland is PO'd after the club traded Aaron Herrera for half a mil and an int'l slot, with little in return. We get into the week’s soccer news in our new weekly podcast, Real Salty.

The club traded Aaron Herrera to Montreal for:

  • $500,000 in general allocation money

  • 1 international roster slot

  • 1st round pick in recent MLS SuperDraft

The problem, according to McFarland, was that in her mind Herrera was the best defensive player RSL had. So, to give up so much in return for a half-mil, a slot that may or may not be filled and a kid who will likely play for Monarchs is a lot. On the flipside, we discuss the pros and cons of re-signing center back Marcelo Silva.

In the second segment [6:00-14:00], McFarland and I discuss how the secretive nature of the club has been biting it in the butt with a certain subset of the fanbase, and we’re joined by a very special guest, Tray Fitsgarbled.

We’re adamant about this front office needing to get out in front of future information so that a fucking blog [no offense towards this blog, but c’mon, FO! shit!!] doesn’t have to break news about the next David Ochoa-style saga.

We also talked in what was foreshadowing: that is, the prospects of losing Sergio Cordova, our leading scorer—which happened after this episode went to air, when his current loan deal from David Blitzer-owned FC Augsburg had run its course on Dec. 31, 2022.

The way the offseason has gone has everyone looking forward to the Leagues Cup—this monthlong summer tournament featuring teams from the US, Canada AND Mexico [finally]. A World Cup-style format, at that! And what does Major League Soccer do? Put it on Univision! I talk about this in the third segment.

  1. One fucking network?!?

  2. The other catch—it will have limited coverage.

  3. I’m with everyone else who’s ticked off about this; MLS blew a golden opportunity to showcase it here.

It should be a breakthrough event, a game-changer at which MLS AND Liga MX have a once-in-a-lifetime shot at getting new eyeballs on both of the leagues. But, what in the hell else would you expect from a social media team who forgot to publicize Real Salt Lake defender Bryan Oviedo [Costa Rica] during the World Cup?!

Finally: I get into what the MLS Playoffs format could look like in the coming years—which is [going back to my take on limited Leagues Cup coverage] why the Leagues Cup blew this opportunity to sell this shit to potential viewers!
