Real Salty: What To Do With More Homegrowns Who May Not Be Ready For The Biggest Stage?

RSL superfan Sheena McFarland is not impressed after the club signed four homegrowns and another winger, and former Royals coach Craig Harrington got a slap on the wrist for his douchery

Real Salty: What Are We Supposed To Do With More Homegrowns Who May Not Be Ready For The Big Stage?

In the first segment, Sheena and I try to make sense of RSL signing a right winger when it still needs a 9!

We’re more than a little torqued that RSL went out and signed a right winger instead of a 9 and no, Sheena does not want Sergio Cordova back.

This Just In: New guy A.C. Gomez has not scored 13 goals for the Millionarios first-team; he scored half for his U-20 team]. Now that THAT is out in the open, where the hell is Sebastian Velasquez to guide all these Colombians?

The problem, according to McFarland, is the same as it ever was; we signed another player about whom little is known. We get into more of that in the second segment.

But what do I know?

I mean, from the looks of things you don’t have a scout like Andy in your arsenal and you already have Jefferson Savarino [and Anderson Julio] on the right side, so now that Tate Schmitt is gone, precisely who will play on the left if Justin Meram is injured? [Cause the new guy A.C. Gomez has only scored ONE goal over there in his entire pro career.] Diego Luna? Sure, maybe--Brian breaks that down and talks about what this season could look like for RSL in year two under Pablo.

If you bring in Velasquez, argued Brian, not only will you get him on a discount [he’s repped by Chris Wingert, last deal went for between 150-300K] you’ll get a locker room leader in the midfield and, someone who can play on the left if Meram goes down to an injury. Problem solved, bing, bam, BOOM.

Breaking news: RSL owner Ryan Smith at a preseason media scrum Monday said in part that he would be banking on the academy to pull the club through.

The club just signed four players to homegrown contracts and/or extensions:

  • about $1 million in total, +/- a few 100K if we’re going by their last HG deals

  • 2 more years [with an option for a third—except for one guy]

  • Univ. of Portland DF Delentz Pierre got one year [+club option, in 2024]

Don’t miss the ticket to the Sheena Show—because she was not impressed by these four signings, either. [I’m guessing she wasn’t the only one.]

Oh, by the way, we’d like to share some breaking news [that local media conveniently stuffed in some overhead compartment]:

The old Royals head coach got bodyslammed by the NWSL [kind of]:

  1. Two-year suspension

  2. Which is like a slap on your wrist

  3. Not as severe but he's still an ass for what he said to those ladies

Should this be a ban for life to set a tone—rather than some slap on the wrist violation that three other coaches got? We get into it, in the podcast.

Finally: This big-splash signing of a winger along with a bunch of homegrown dudes who have a tendency to not put out [goals and assists] is a warning sign that all might not be okay, and that THIS season might be painful.
