Utah Utes Rose Bowl Prediction: Can They Establish That National Footprint Vs Penn State?

The Utes need this win in their second consecutive Rose Bowl Game appearance. They'll get that opportunity vs Penn State [Monday, 3 pm MST, ABC/ESPN]. But first, you have to like the Utes Top-25 recruiting class that they just landed.

3 Recruits To Watch in 2023:

  • OT Spencer Fano [Timpview HS], consensus 4-star recruit

  • CB CJ Blocker [New Caney, TX HS]

  • WR Daidren Zipperer [Pittsburgh, transfer portal]

The problems the Utes had protecting Cam Rising will be helped by a recruiting class highlighted by six 4-star recruits. That included three big names from the transfer portal, bookended by CB Miles Battle [Ole Miss] who inked his commitment yesterday. I talk about that class in the first segment of this podcast episode—though I did have to interrupt my first guest [more on that, in this episode!].

In our discussion about the Utah-Penn State Rose Bowl Game in the second segment, I talk to former Daily Utah Chronicle [U student newspaper] editor Sheena Mc Farland about the changes she’s seen on the campus since those BCS Busters days in the early 2000s.

We also chat about the direction in which we see the program going, and how vital it is in this Rose Bowl Game for the No. 8 Utes to establish that national footprint on the East Coast after a devastating loss at Florida. I wrote about that, here:

But we talk about how that Utes swarming, punishing defense eventually helped get the team back on track even after the season-ending injury to Van Fillinger, their stalwart D-end out of Corner Canyon HS. In the process, the Utes helped themselves to another Pac-12 title, a second win over USC in one season, and a repeat appearance at the Rose Bowl Game.

The way the Utes will win the Rose Bowl Game varies, according to the 3-person panel—but all three of us agree that Utah will get the W vs. Penn State.

  1. One on the panel sees a high scoring game!

  2. The other, a low-scoring slugfest.

  3. I’m with the other person; I see this one being a defensive battle.

It should be a fun game, though Utes fans don’t seem to be wearing the same Rose Bowl Game gear they were, last year. I wrote about that, here:

Finally: Find out what all of our Rose Bowl Game predictions were by listening to this podcast. I’d again like to thank Sheena as well as U alum and podcaster Katie Drake for appearing on this special episode of the BVU Podcast. As for myself, here’s how my prediction went:

Utah 27, Penn State 18
