On Homecoming in Magna, it was Granger's in a 26-6 rivalry win at Cyprus more narrow than the score indicated. And, Hunter gallops to a 51-14 victory at Kearns.
You and I both know it doesn’t work that way. In a perfect world, it might—this ain’t perfect. It is skewed. If it wasn’t, West would be No. 1 and winless Tville wouldn’t be 24th out of 29 schools. (Top 24 make the state playoffs in Utah 5A)
I know how it works, and wish there was maybe a point differential category added. I would argue the opposite of your point for the exact reasoning you brought up. If there was nuance added and not purely the numbers of the three categories mentioned, then yes, West could be #1 and Taylorsville would be closer to the bottom. However, that is not how it works, RPI is very far from perfect, but the numbers do all the talking.
We can agree to disagree. IMHO, the numbers do not do all the talking. The powers that be at the UHSAA do. If the numbers were all that factored in, then winless Tville wouldn't have been No. 24 out of 29 teams
Love the show! Some more context on the RPI, there are no “brownie points” for playing better than expected against a team. All that matters is Win %, Opponent Win %, and Opponent’s Opponent Win %. Weighted accordingly, 45%, 45%, 10%. Very cut and dry with no nuance to be added from opinions on how a team played. So though Cyprus and Kearns played better than the score indicated, they won’t receive any credit for that in the RPI.
